Olasumbo Modupe is a broadcast journalist with Lagos Television, and a graduate of Mass Communication with a master’s degree in International Relations with a focus on Diplomacy and Strategic Studies. With vast experience in reporting developmental issues for more than a decade, Olasumbo is privileged to have covered politics, crime, judiciary, education, agriculture, health, rural development, religion, and deputy governors’ offices. As a news editor, she ensured a hitch-free bulletin for the station’s flagship News and Other News belts, which earned her Staff of the Year in 2009 and 2016. Her interest in the health beat is spurred by the inadequacies and limited reportage in the country’s health sector. Presently, she anchors and produces “Sound Health.” Olasumbo is a Family Life Education Advocate and has been recognised by the Presidency for her role in increased advocacy on reproductive haalth issues in Delta State through the MDGs/FLE Programme. Olasumbo realised the need to intensify efforts at increasing the awareness level on the use of modern contraceptives and maternal mortality reduction by partnering with a private provider of family planning and reproductive health products (DKT Nigeria) to develop content, anchor and also produce a weekly 45 minutes programme. She is a content provider, producer, TV director and a nonlinear editor. Olasumbo currently resides in Lagos, Nigeria., with her family. She can be contacted at olasumbo_badmos@yahoo.com.

“She is into advocacy, she has two health programs that she produce and present ”Sound Health” & ” Contraceptives Matters” weekly. With the above mentioned programs, she has been able to reach out to millions of people

– Nominator

Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

As a broadcast journalist of more than 10 years, I have been able to initiate reports on reproductive health issues as well as increase advocacy to halve maternal related deaths in Delta and Lagos States.
In the past 6 months,I have realised the need to intensify efforts at increasing awareness on the use of modern contraceptives through a weekly health show(Sound Health)I initiated and present.
I have also been able to partner with one of the largest and private Providers of family planning and Reproductive health Products in the Country(Honey and banana/DKT) by developing content, anchoring and producing a weekly 30 minutes show on the Use of Modern contraceptives.
With my expertise, the show,Contraceptive Matters with DKT has been able to dispel misconceptions about Family planning.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

I am petrified that about 830 Women still die of Pregnancy related deaths, majorly in developing Countries. As a family Life Programme Educator,a Millennium Development Goal MDGs-NYSC initiative during my 1 year National Youth Service Scheme,I was able to mentor Secondary School Students and Out of school Girls on life surviving skills and reproductive health issues in Asaba,Ughelli,Okpanam and some rural areas in Delta and Lagos state.
This has also prepared me ahead of my Broadcast career.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

Aside from developing content, presenting Programs and Reports on reproductive health issues,I have assisted and engaged women and girls of different ages in different outreach programs.
I have led the Family Life Educators team in budgeting, planing, conducting programs in schools, religious gatherings and seminars.
I have also employed social media platforms to encourage feedback on modern family planing.RecentIy,i extended airtime, added more segments in the new quarter based on viewership.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work?

Effective media campaign is key in advocacy.Unfortunately, resources for increased advocacy has always been a challenge working for a Government owned Medium,Winning will avail me the opportunity to produce more Documentaries,Minifeatures and jingles in major Languages in Lagos State (English,Yoruba ,pidgin,Ogun and Hausa)
I will also increase outreach programs at Religious,Social gatherings and on Social Media. This will in turn allow Families especially Women make smart family planning choices.
