Over the past year,i have actively been a part of the training team and our work has been on training Healthcare providers on the administration of Sayana Press three monthly injection.By doing this,it enables us to increase the availability, accessibility and choice of family planning methods in 7 Northern States in Nigeria irrespective of its location.
Having realised the benefits of health system strengthening via the facility based training,i have also been actively involved in demand creation activities(BCC) in these northen states which include an interactive radio program in Hausa Language addressing the myths and misconception of Child spacing considering socio-cultural nuances in the states. The feedback from adolescents and couples has increased the demand for FP services.
The rate of drop outs of the girl child from school is alarming in some parts of the northern region considering the fact that most of these young girls are married off at a tender age. This is a myth in the ISLAMIC RELIGION because in ISLAM,education is very compulsory for every muslim (males and females).
Again, after marriage, child bearing starts and if they are not educated on child spacing options, the rate of maternal mortality will continue to rise.
I led the translation team to translate our first radio program in Hausa and this stimulated a lot of interest from our audience who responded with questions related to locations they can request for specific methods of child spacing.
Since my focus has been on the northern region, the grant will be used to create a virtual based BCC program (RAAYUWA FM)with special interest on real life videos from the region. Starting with one LGA,a database of opinion leaders(leaders from FOMAN,NASFAT,Male groups and others) will be created.
volunteered Consultants will be hired with Ulamas from each ward in the LGA to address FP issues during thier meeting days. The video will then be shared via whatapp and other social media channel.
