Dynamic, enthusiastic & emerging leader working to improve access to FP services for India’s huge & heterogeneous population. Technical, analytical skills & capacity to articulate her vision & knowledge makes her an asset to National FP program. – Dr. S.K Sikdar, Deputy Commissioner, Incharge, FP at FP division, MoHFW, Government of India
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

In almost a decade of working for RMNCH+A, FP is one of the most challenging area. A close association with MoHFW in last 4 years provided a plethora of opportunities to contribute towards improving access to & quality of FP services. Some of these opportunities that translated into achievements are: Development of India & state specific FP 2020 estimates & strategies which was the first of its kind among 69 FP 2020 member countries & was acknowledged at FP 2020 Reference Group & ICFP; Providing leadership to program/policies including development of costed plans for all 36 states; Developing mechanisms for strengthening data quality and triangulation from various data sources for all States. Advocate & oversee implementation of FP policies across all 36 States of India.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Working in world’s largest democracy instilled passion & responsibility to work for a larger ambit of development. I realized that when people make correct decisions regarding their reproductive health & simultaneously if provided with options for the same they can take charge of their life, family & its future; & here FP has a pivotal role to play. The passion was not sparked by written evidences alone but field experiences & insights gained from community & providers.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

The commitment, ownership & an inner drive to strengthen program molded me to obtain a leadership role where vision for FP program was translated into strategic approach. In this role I have been representing FP at various national & global platforms from last 4 years & providing leadership to all program activities including development of country costed plans, roll out of new contraceptives in the country, providing vision & support to team members for all program activities.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I would like invest this resource in evidence generation to tap the opportunity to reach the un-reached and explore the possibility of expanding the service where young people can have improved access to Reproductive and Sexual Health services in an integrated manner.
