Julian's FP passion! Her resilience in introducing Sayana Press, managing CHEWs (DKT Bees) in the field, and providing counseling and referral support to young people. Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I am a trained Nurse in Reproductive Health committed to creating a community that supports the reproductive rights of young people to experience respectful, dignified contraceptives care. Through my work in Nigeria with DKT International, I have championed increasing access to FP services and information through community based contraceptive distribution and providing correct information through mobile text messages to youths. I have lead the community introduction of a new 3monthly Sayana Press injection in urban slums of Lagos,Nigeria by training 450CHEWs who actively deliver FP services to 150,000 women &provide non-judgmental counselling.I have personally answered queries to more than 6000 women in 3 months about benefits of FP,clinics to access FP services and how to use sayana press

What sparked your passion for family planning?

As a staff nurse in Lagos University Teaching Hospital in 2009, I witnessed a teenage death because of multiple abortion. At that point, I felt how we have failed in providing options of contraception to this young girl and many other adolescents. This event further sparked my passion to disseminate information and services about contraceptive options and reproductive health in low resource communities

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

I have recruited&mentored CHEWs from low income settings, where I had to keep them motivated despite multiple rejections experienced while working in the communities. Many of these health workers have never worked outside a static health facility, which was a barrier for positive community interactions.I worked with these health workers by organizing one to one and group communication sessions with community members and demonstrated active listening communication skills to overcome the problem

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I will create an online community for youths to share their positive experiences of accessing contraceptive services, which I believe will empower young people to access family planning services. This platform will enable youths to interact and share their experiences about contraceptives and reproductive health. I will also use this platform to refer intending users of contraceptive to friendly health care providers
