Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I am the first physician of Bangladesh who has taken the initiatives to bridge the gap between health services and people. My activities are challenging taboos, eradicating malpractices from the society. Currently I am using:
1. Electronic media: Planner, presenter of a ground breaking, longest running, popular women’s health show "TonuMon" [Mind and Body] in BTV.
2. Print media: Regular contributor of health related articles in national dailies.
3. Free YouTube lectures in Bengali: https://www.youtube.com/user/drpurabihelpdesk/videos
4. Facebook: Thousands of followers are regularly updated with health information.
5. Training volunteers: To run advocacy program.
6. Community level free health services.
7. Drawing the attention of the policy makers on health issues.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

From my social responsibility I provide free medical services in my village during weekend. In course of my service I noted the wide spread ignorance on reproductive health care, family planning. Most of the people are hesitant, ignorant, too poor. Delay in consulting doctors often lead to otherwise preventable complications, increase in treatment expenses, reduction in chance of survival. Lack of awareness, motivation are the main causes of sufferings. It sparked my passion to work in media.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

BTV is the State owned national TV channel which covers 97% of countries population. My regular TV show has a wide impact on contraceptive prevalence rate of Bangladesh. My free lectures on different methods of contraceptives on YouTube have a wide impact on awareness, motivation. Bengali speaking people all over the world are using these lectures. Number of viewers [129861] are increasing daily. Medical students are also benefited from these lectures to acquire expertise on counseling a couple.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

If I am the winner of 120 under 40, it will be a wide platform of networking, collaboration and partnership with like minded people in future. I will use this grant to start a community based advocacy program highlighting the risk of child marriage and unsafe abortion. Educate people to fulfill their unmet need. I will also teach the normal physiology of conception, need and use of emergency contraceptives to at least 500 high school/ college students of Bangladesh.
