Dolorosa impacts the lives of thousands of women & girls by providing urgently needed maternal & reproductive healthcare in northern Tanzania. Overseeing 209 health facilities & 300 health workers, she is dedicated to changing lives in Shinyanga. – Caroline Crosbie, Senior Vice President at Pathfinder International
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I led the development and implementation of a successful program of mobile application to support community health workers (CHWs) and first time young mothers in Shinyanga region to provide counseling using the Balanced Counseling Strategy Plus protocol. The application guides the CHW through a well-tested protocol to educate the client about all available methods and drawing on the client’s fertility intentions. CHWs distribute short-term methods and provide referrals for long acting and permanent methods. CHW champions were identified, trained and given an app to mentor new CHWs and a pay for performance considering Tiahrt amendment was introduced. On average, there was a 522% increase in the number of monthly registrations and a 22-fold increase in the number of follow-up visits.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Personal reasons; A grandchild of Barbaig Chief who had more than 72 children and 800 grandchildren.
Unexpected conceiving of my handsome second born while her sister was only 8 months
Country needs: Tanzania is faced with high reproductive challenges including low contraceptive prevalence rate and high number of teenage pregnancies, with 59% in Shinyanga Region. As a Family planning literate and understanding the pain of unexpected pregnancies, I felt the need to give back to my community.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

Overseeing implementation of 3 successful projects, mHealth project to increase access to contraception through part-time community health workers, a first-time parents intervention tied to increasing access to quality LARC services in static sites, and a maternal health project that focuses on a district wide approach to use a combination of community, facility, and hospital based interventions linked with extensive use of mobile technologies for communication and enhanced service delivery.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

Taking into consideration challenges faced by young first time mothers to live a healthy reproductive life, I will consider incorporating income generating activities into the existing small first time mothers peer groups by training master trainers among them, on Household Income and Savings Association (HISA). They will then train their fellows, buying shares, take loans and discuss about Healthy Timing and Spacing of Pregnancy. I believe, Economic Liberation will allow better choices.
