Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

As the Founder of Sapphires of Worth and the South West Regional Coordinator for the International Youth Alliance for Family Planning, I am charged with the responsibility of delivering Comprehensive Sexuality Education and training Peer educators. Our organization has organized series of events and reached out to over 2000 young women on matters concerning Sexual and Reproductive health. Our team has also trained about 145 peer educators and distributed condoms. I as the founder have been invited to several health events to speak on matters that affect the abilities of women to plan their families such as Intimate Partner Violence and stigmatization. Our team has also visited 8 secondary schools in hard-to-reach areas to speak on issues surrounding personal hygiene and sex education.

What sparked your passion for family planning?

I became passionate about family planning during my tenure as the health and sanitation minister of Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence in University of Ibadan in 2012. There was a huge need to educate women on matters concerning Sexual and reproductive Health as I saw quite a number of septic abortions and other complications such as haemorrhage. Most young women involved had a lot of unanswered questions and were afraid of being judged by health care workers at the school clinic.

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

Leadership is the ability to know the way, show the way and go the way with your team. I had started with a team of volunteers who despite being in the medical field, were not very knowledgeable on all aspects of training peer educators. I reached out to the Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH) Ibadan and they guided me on the path to developing an effective Peer Educator Manual. With this, we had a training of trainers events and educated the team.

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

It will be a wonderful opportunity for our organization to learn from other young professionals working in our field. I would particularly use all the opportunities presented by this platform to guide my team on doing more for Family planning in Nigeria. The funds would enable us to complete more projects we have planned such as the Peer Educator Training Event 2017, Outreach to Secondary Schools themed 'Youths and Sex Ed'. Finally, Winning this award would encourage our team to do more.
