It’s common for health providers to deny young people implants & IUDs in Tanzania. So Anna dedicates herself to correcting these biases and introducing youth-friendly services, to ensure all young people have access to contraception. – Caroline Crosbie, Senior Vice President at Pathfinder International
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

I took part in reviewing and updating National training curriculums for Comprehensive Family Planning Clinical training, Post Partum Family Planning curriculum,Basic training skills and CPAC and ensured they are competent based and included relevance to Young people.
I coordinate and conduct family planning training of health providers which include orientation and value clarification towards serving youths 2015- 2017 trained 783 providers. By mentorship program we follow providers to ensure desired competency are achieved and bias to adolescents are addressed.
In the districts we work, uptake of modern methods has increased from 13111 to 44458 same time 2015, 2016.Method mix changed from mainly injectable to implants for Adults and youth. 800folds increase in youth FP uptake

What sparked your passion for family planning?

In my previous work in a Maternal and child heath , I was amazed by the number of children who come for growth monitoring/ vaccination and age and parity of women who come for ANC during outreach. In one instance I made a joke that I hear women in this village in each year you are either pregnant or have a baby below one year, to my surprise they said in a rhyme "Yeah that our style" and added, services are not available, spouse are not supportive even your friends talk ill of you use a method

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

As one of the committee member of the Pathfinder Journal club, I work with colleagues to ensure what we do falls in line with the current evidence and are high impact practices to increase efficiency and proper use of funds.
Working very closely with health facilities during supervision and mentorship, I ensure that the standards and guidelines set for FP and youth friendly services are met followed.
I advocated for adolescent specific sessions in FP training curriculums and are included

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

I will use the platform to advocate for young people contraception by communicating the bias at all levels towards adolescent contraception.
Given the human resources constraints facing most health facilities, $1000 will be spent in one high volume facility to pilot a mobile application for self counseling to empower women and adolescent with information to enhance informed choice , reduce provider workload and bias towards counseling for certain methods which are easily administered.
