Alex initiated the Adolescent e-Voucher Program in Kenya which seeks to promote Reproductive Health Services in order to reduce the high level of teen pregnancies. He played an essential role in getting this program up and running successfully. – Anna Gorter, Medical Doctor / Epidemiologist at Senior Consultant in Vouchers for Marie Stopes and Options
Describe your contributions to and achievements in family planning.

Within the Choice for Change(C4C) Program,I initiated the NIMEAMUA Voucher Project which is implemented within the select AMUA Social Franchise Network in Kenya. The project is geared towards providing adolescents with Full Choice of all contraceptive methods;including long acting and reversible ones.Giving Vouchers to young people which assists them in accessing free reproductive health services is a promising strategy.Vouchers not only reduce the financial barrier for adolescents, but also guides and empowers them in that having the voucher at hand assures the young person of being attended to and not being turned away. With Voucher distribution, the adolescent has a face-to-face explanation & guidance.Over the past 7 months of implementation, there has been a 37 % increase in service uptake

What sparked your passion for family planning?

Having interviewed a participant in the " Drivers of Teenage Pregnancy " research study in the Kenyan County of Kilifi; i was surprised to hear from young girl who had two children and was pregnant with a third at the age of 17. Her sexual debut was 9 years. The rate of teenage pregnancy is very high in this county & I felt like we need innovative interventions to mitigate this. The study acts as a build up to the project i worked on that addressed unsafe abortion among youths in slums in 2014

Give one or two examples of how you display leadership in your family planning work.:

As website contributor (Writer) for the Youth for Change global youth-led coalition of youth advocates,I champion for Contraception from an angle of teenage pregnancy.Through twitter I have shared a lot of content on ASRH-FP https://agilience.com/en/alexomari1
I am also involved as a co-investigator in the ADOLESCENTS’(AGED 15-19 YEARS)PERCEPTIONS OF FERTILITY CONTROL IN RURAL,PERI-URBAN AND URBAN SETTINGS IN KENYA:A QUALITATIVE PARTICIPATORY ETHNOGRAPHIC EVALUATION AND RESEARCH (PEER) STUDY

If you are named a winner of 120 under 40, how will you use this new platform and the $1000 grant to advance your work? :

Currently we are implementing the Human Centered Design approach in serving the young people around Kenya with Comprehensive Sexual Reproductive Health Services .I will advocate for this targeted and needs based approach through the 120 under 40 platform by sharing best practices and lessons learned . The grant will be used to design a similar intervention in Magarini, Kilifi County by effecting the recommendations of the PEER Study .This will be done in-conjunction with Marie Stopes Kenya.
