Starting January 2016, 120 Under 40 accepted nominations of people 40 years or younger who have made significant contributions to family planning all over the world. Nominations closed on May 22, 2016.
The 40 winners for 2016 will be chosen by the public via online voting, a jury of experts and leaders in family planning, and the project secretariat. Online public voting and jury review took place June 27 to July 11.
The 40 winners for 2016 were announced on September 13. Each winner received $1,000, furnished by the Gates Institute, to continue their work in family planning. A smaller representative group of the 40 winners were invited to the United States for a series of celebrations, events, and activities, from September 21 to 23. Year 1 officially wrapped up on World Contraception Day, September 26.
The process will repeat in 2017 and 2019, so that 120 young family planning champions will be assembled by 2020, a highly significant year for the family planning community.
